NORTHRIDGE IN THE NEWS
‘Women Behind the Camera’ to be Screened at Hollywood Film Festival
Cal State Northridge cinema and television arts professor Alexis Krasilovsky’s groundbreaking documentary, "Women Behind the Camera," has been accepted as an official selection of the Moondance International Film Festival to be held at University Studios CityWalk Theater September 7-9. The festival bills itself as one of the premier venues for the exhibition and promotion of feature and short films in the United States, and one of the leading indie film festivals in the world. "I’m so excited that the North American premier of ‘Women Behind the Camera’ is taking place in Hollywood, where there are so many talented camerawomen in need of recognition," Krasilovky said. "We are hopeful that this film will encourage the film and television industries to increase the numbers of camerawomen beyond the less than five percent who shoot the top 250 films today by encouraging the decision makers to set timetables, establish mentorship programs and pro-actively solicit the reels of camerawomen and minorities." Krasilovsky spent six years of intense production putting together "Women Behind the Camera," the first documentary to examine the lives, work and challenges of camerawomen around the globe. Faculty Receive Fellowships to Study Issues that Affect Los Angeles Residents
Three Cal State Northridge faculty members each have received a $12,000 fellowship from the John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation to support their research of issues that impact the lives of Los Angelenos. The fellowship recipients are women’s studies and Chicana/o studies professor Marta Lopez-Garza, who is taking a look at what happens to Los Angeles-area women when they are released from prison and attempt to rebuild their lives; history professor Josh Sides, who is evaluating the impact of corporate retailers on South Los Angeles; and urban studies professor Ward Thomas, who is examining the impact of air quality regulations on the fabricated metal products industry in Los Angeles."While the research of the three professors covers a broad spectrum of issues, the issues that each of them are looking at are real issues of concern in greater Los Angeles," said Elizabeth Say, dean of CSUN’s College of Humanities. "This is just another demonstration that our faculty are conducting research that is connected to real-world issues. What they learn can have a true impact on the lives of people who live in Los Angeles." Click here for full story.

COMMUNITY SERVICES
Business Owners Take Note
Putting together a marketing plan, business plan or even coming up with advertising ideas can overwhelm a small business owner already juggling too many balls. At the same time, many university business students would jump at an opportunity to apply key concepts they learn in the classroom to real-world situations. Enter Cal State Northridge’s Wells Fargo Center for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, which for more than 30 years has offered free consulting services—from business and marketing plans to the development of commercial graphic designs and commercial television advertisements—to local businesses, while giving Northridge students the hands-on training that will make them invaluable employees, or confident entrepreneurs, in the future. "It is very important for students to apply the theories and abstract concepts we teach them in the classroom," said marketing professor Franck Vigneron, director of the Wells Fargo Center. "The center plays the dual role of providing hands-on learning for our students while offering a valuable service to the local business community." Accessing the center’s consulting service is fairly simple. A potential client contacts the center, detailing the services he or she would like. Vigneron and his colleagues in the College of Business and Economics consider the request and match the client with a professor and team of students whose classroom curriculum complements the business owner’s particular needs. Clients and students then meet throughout the academic semester. Each case study culminates in a usable report and presentation at the semester’s end. Vigneron said performing the case studies gives students experience that will help them prepare for careers as entrepreneurs, small business owners and consultants. Clients get professional plans that they can take to their businesses and implement. Vigneron said the center plans to continue growing. "Our long term goal is to increase the number of student projects to 15 per year," he said. "By enhancing the success and performance of local businesses, we help strengthen this community."
